Goal for HA: Lucas wants to learn more about horses and improve his horsemanship as much as possible while at HA. He doesn’t really have desires to become “the next famous reining superstar” or anything like that. He enjoys competitions, but to him that isn’t the end all be all of horsemanship. He secretly desires to learn more disciplines since he’s only ever really known and ridden “ranch” work. Getting to know new people, and expanding his comfort zone would be nice as well, since he’s spent very little time away from Oklahoma.

Riding History: Lucas was riding before he was born; his mother was an avid rider, and continued to ride through her pregnancy as long as she could. After Lucas was born he was sitting on the back of a horse long before he could walk, so it isn’t surprising that being on the back of a horse feels like a second nature to him. Growing up on a working cattle ranch in Oklahoma, he came to know the horses he rode as more than just animals or a form of entertainment. They were partners, and they had to rely on each other in order to be successful. If he didn’t trust the horse he was on, and the horse didn’t trust him, it was just setting them up for a disaster.
Through high school, in addition to helping as much as possible on the ranch, Lucas competed in high school rodeo events, and even dabbled in smaller working cow horse events, and team sorting and penning events. When he was a sophomore in high school he started working for a local cutting horse trainer, Jason Turner, who took Lucas under his wing and started teaching him more about horsemanship and the sport itself. Lucas split his time between school, his duties at home, training for high school rodeo and working for Jason.

Example Post: The day he received his acceptance letter into HA.His eyes were still closed tightly as he stretched his arms above his head and a soft groan escaped his lips. Sighing softly, Lucas rubbed his hands over his face willing himself to wake up. He had no alarm clock blaring, no sunlight streaming into his face, nothing to force him awake, except the scents of frying eggs, bacon and pancakes that wafted through the air and pure and honest habit. Finally pushing himself out of his bed, he quickly pulled on a well-worn pair of jeans, a plain white t-shirt and a button up long sleeve over that before heading downstairs to the already busy kitchen. Despite the fact the sun was still below the horizon and the sky was just showing the beginning of a pre-dawn glow everyone in the Montgomery house was already awake and getting ready for a long day. This was a normal morning for Lucas and his family, up before the sun so they could get as much done as possible during the day. Running the ranch took more work than most realized, the animals didn’t care if you wanted to sleep in or take a day off, they still needed feed and water and to be cared for, fences still came down, irrigation pipes still broke, and anything that could go wrong would, especially if you took the day off.
Once he had eaten breakfast, Lucas headed to the door where he pulled on his boots and stepped outside. Closing his eyes he filled his lungs with the cool morning air before starting for the horse barn. Greeted by soft nickers and a few impatient whinnies as he reached the barn doors a crooked smile played on his lips. “Hold your horses, I’m early today guys!” He joked and shook his head as he opened the doors to see each of the horses’ looking over their stall doors patiently, and some not-so-patiently waiting for their breakfast. Quickly feeding each of the horses, he began the chore of mucking out the stalls. “How are you today ElySTAFF POSITIONS” He crooned affectionately as he stepped into his old gelding’s stall and patted his neck. Standing still for a moment, simply listening to the soft noises of the horse’s eating, Lucas turned and began cleaning the stall as his father and brother came into the barn to help him finish. It was going to be another long day but that was his life, and he wouldn’t trade it for anything. He always felt at peace when he was around horses, there was just something about the smells of horse and hay and straw that made him feel complete.
Once they finished tending the horses, it was time to actually get to work for the day. Haltering Ely, Lucas walked the big gelding out of his stall and after a quick grooming he saddled his horse up and waited for the rest of his family to follow suit. Mounting quickly as everyone else finished saddling their horses, Lucas and his father headed out to ride the fence lines and check in on the cows and calves. It wasn’t necessarily hard work, as long as everything went well, but it was certainly important.
The sun was about at its highest when they started to approach the house after riding the border of one of the pastures when he saw his mother run out onto the patio shouting at them. Concerned, he urged his gelding into a fast, ground covering lope, it wasn’t normal for his mother to behave like this so immediately he thought there was something wrong. Sliding to a stop, Lucas quickly dismounted and rushed to his mother’s side. “What’s going onSTAFF POSITIONSWhat’s the matterSTAFF POSITIONS” He panted as he looked into her excited eyes, trying to figure out just what had caused this reaction from her. It was then that a wide grin spread across his mother’s features. “You’re in! You got in! Lukie you’re going to Hollow Aspen!” She shouted before throwing her arms around him, pulling him into a hug.
At first he was simply too stunned to say or do anything. He couldn’t believe it. He had never thought he would actually get into Hollow Aspen. Wrapping his arms around his mother in a tight hug, he lifted her off the ground laughing. “I can’t believe it!” He laughed as he spun them around in a circle. It was a like a dream come true for the young man, of all the schools he could attend, there was nowhere else like Hollow Aspen.
