•••Our eyes were bright, out of sight. Two strangers caught behind the night.
"Okay, a large popcorn, redvines, M&Ms, and two medium drinks. That'll be $18.25," the teen said as she looked up from her cash register at the young couple in front of her. This was Avery's first official day at her new job. She had been at the theater for four hours the day before for the painfully long new employee orientation where they basically went though safety videos, gave a tour of the facility, and drilled the idea into your head that the customer was always right. About four other students from Hollow Aspen had also been hired and had attended the orientation the day before. She hadn't recognized any of them but Henery Lockhert, who she had met briefly at the school office a few days prior. The outgoing teen really hadn't had much time to socialize since everything was happening so quickly. She still couldn't believe that she had a job. It would definitely be nice once those paychecks started rolling in every two weeks.
The brunette smiled at the couple as the guy handed over his debit card with a slightly irked expression on his face. The theater concessions were horribly overpriced and you could easily swing by any convenience store before the movie and pick up the same exact food for a fraction of the price. Avery wondered why more people didn't do this. Of course if they did, she'd probably be out of a job since none of the movie theater food would sell.
She swiped the card and waited for the electronic register to accept it before handing the card and receipt back to the guy. "Thanks," his girlfriend replied as they gathered up their movie food and turned to head off toward their movie. "Thank you. Enjoy the show," Avery chirped after them and turned to her right to face her team leader who had been working besides her and observing her for the last hour. "How am I doing, JeffSTAFF POSITIONS" She asked the 22 year old, skinny male with day old stubble. He wore a white button down shirt, black vest, and tie; like the other team leaders. The team members wore simple polo shirts while the managers paraded around in suits. They seemed much too formal but nobody seemed to question their attire.
"You're doing really well for your first day. Just remember to keep the line moving. It's not too busy right now since it's midday but once it starts getting dark out, this place will be packed. Especially weekends," Jeff replied as he wiped off the counter around his register. The brunette nodded, her ponytail bobbing, as she tried to soak in as much information as possible that day. "Now that you seem to have a basic understanding of concessions, how about you log out of your register and head into the back room. The other newbies are in there with one of the managers going over some basic box office training so some of you guys can start selling tickets up front. We've been horribly understaffed lately. Then after that you can help me train a few of the team members out here. Got itSTAFF POSITIONS" "Yep, I think so. I'll be back in a bit," Avery replied as she entered her passcode and logged out of the cash register, turning for the door to the back room. "Have fun out here with all these customers, Jeff," she said with a chuckle as her earth toned eyes scanned the almost empty lobby. Not many people went to see movies around noon on a Wednesday, apparently. "Oh, I'll try to keep up with them all," Jeff said with an eye roll before turning back to his register.
Walking down the short hallway, she turned into a conference room where a few of the newbies, as well as a few people she didn't know were sitting around an oval table. She spotted the back of Henery's head and slid into the chair beside him. "Hey Henery. What'd I miss so farSTAFF POSITIONS" She asked in a low voice, a half smile playing on her lips at the familiar boy. Her brown eyes flitted up to the manager who was ruffling through some papers in a manilla folder. It was Mr. Gregors, the manager with a voice who could put you to sleep within five minutes and was an overall oaf. From the looks of the projection screen and bored faces around the room, it seemed like he had just finished one of his incredibly boring power points. "Rough hour, I imagineSTAFF POSITIONS" she muttered with a raised eyebrow and an inquisitive glance at the british teen.
