[/s] .A horse is only as strong as its Rider. I could live without money I could live without the vain. Early morning sun, just peaking through the clouds, the morning grass and air full with moist textures. Horses grazing peacefully, their nostrils releasing white puffs of carbon dioxide to be released for the earth to breath. Thinking about his attire, James threw on some old jeans, black cowboy boots and a white muscle shirt, grasping the black cowboy hat, dusting it off and placing it on his head. James hadn't worn anything like this since he left the ranch, honestly he missed it. Grasping the thick, black lead rope in his right hand, making his way around the stables toward the pasture. Two large horses stood side by side grazing. Lifting two fingers to his mouth James let out a high whistle and the slightly shorter stallion, Primo lifted his head and whinnied loudly and picked up his pace to a canter, approaching the gate. The other, large bay, Monster, raised his head but continued to graze.
Clipping the rope to the stallions halter, patting the black with gold outlining black that was fastened to the large brute before leading the stallion out, closing and locking the gate behind him. Primo was sure to whinny a good bye to Monster before prancing next to James like an overly joyed child. With a grin James nudged the stallions nose with his free hand. In the stables James hooked Primo to the cross ties and removed the blanket from the stallions figure and strolled off to the tack room to get the brushes. James had just had his western saddle shipped in from home and was excited to have it around. Bringing his mind back to the project horse, maybe he could get it into westernSTAFF POSITIONS James shrugged it off and began to groom the large animal, Primo stood there contently, now and then letting loose a soft snort or sigh. Once finished James strolled off to put the brushes back into the tack room.

In the sea and the sun and the sand ...
A long night rest had done him a world of good; a lot of small aches had vanished overnight, as had the blurry, fuzzy feeling of a lack of sleep. He was mostly fit again, and if Karoo had already been here, he'd have taken her out for a spin, perhaps taking Jay along. As his mare hadn't arrived yet, he'd have to improvise a little, though, so after dressing in some old and, after closer inspection, semi-dirty jeans, an even older Johnny Cash shirt and a warm hoodie - though the weather might not be bad for the region, he came from African summer, which was a hell of a different temperature and he'd rather not get a cold right now, thank you very much.
He had taken Jay along, though on a collar and leash contrary to habit. He trusted the dog enough to let him loose ninety-nine percent of the time, but he figured he'd keep it safe the next few days, give the students a bit of time to get used to the dog walking around before letting him loose again.
First, he had explored the forest trail annex short cut to the stables, under the guise of 'getting to know the area', though in all honesty he was longing for a few more glimpses at the horses stabled here. With this many great and potential-great riders around, there had to be some magnificent horses hidden away.
The trail had taken twenty-something minutes, mostly due to his own low tempo and Jay, running back and forth. He had the dog back on the leash now, though, and now not for show. He genuinely didn't know what would happen if Jay got close enough a strange 'herd', and he'd rather not find out. Especially not the hard, unpleasant way.
"Aan voet, Jay,"* he warned the dog, who whined once but then slowly approached enough to his boss' will. Noah reached down to brush his hand over Jay's rough fur for a moment before straightening out and walking towards the stable. His horse might not be here yet, he could take a peek already. Get to know the lay of the land so to say, if someone asked.
Nodding at the few persons he encountered, he slowly got through the stalls, only the last aisle raising a little surprise - a big black horse, stallion from the looks of it, being groomed. A quick glance at his watch confirmed to Noah that while it was still early, it wasn't that early anymore, and so he tightened his hold on Jay's leash just in case and walked on, making sure to scuff his feet over the ground a few times so the horse wouldn't spook if he suddenly was close.
He slowed down a bit as he came closer and whistled slowly as his eyes roved over the stallion. "Nice fella ya got there," he complimented the man standing next to the horse; he probably was more to the horse than 'just the groom' if he had to venture a guess.

Upon James' return tp primo there was another man there, with a dog and James couldn't help but give a warm smile as the man whistled and complimented primo. The stallion perked his ears and held his head high, as if he knew they were talking about him. James chuckled and tipped his hat and nodded at the stallion, patting his shoulder "Ahh thank you, he's a good boy, hard headed a lot of the times but other than that, He's a charm Pausing for a moment to smile and take a step forward, kneeling down and holding out a hand to the dog, a warm smile on James' face "Come here buddy this big guy wont hurt you, back on the ranch we have three dogs" James couldn't help the fact that he was an animal person.
James then stood again and cleared his throat "Well, what brings you to the stables so earlySTAFF POSITIONS Got any horses of your ownSTAFF POSITIONS "{/color] James was quite curious, he couldn't tell if he was western or english. Primo however was now trying to bend his head down to the dog, his head tilted slightly as if to be studying the lupine and James couldn't help but chuckle at his horses pure curiosity.

In the sea and the sun and the sand ...
Noah chuckled almost inaudibly as the other man kneeled and held a hand out to Jay - it had taken him some serious thought before he decided to take the dog along and trust he was good with strangers. He hadn't met very many of them, after all, but so far the dog behaved examplary, sniffing the hand before carefully accepting the attention, his own attention still focused on 'his' human and his surroundings. " 's okay, Jay," Noah softly encouraged the dog, rewarding him. " What do you ride with himSTAFF POSITIONS " he addressed the man again, letting the leash slip a little to allow JJ a bit more freedom and breathing room. The horse wasn't his main concern, as Jay had grown up around them, much like Noah had. " Ja, got a mare on her way to here, if nothing's gone wrong. But as of right now, I don't have a horse here. Yet. Jay here," he made a gesture to the dog, who was now laying down keeping a watchful eye on the man and his horse " wanted to get out. He isn't really used to being indoors so much, so I figured a long walk before classes start couldn't hurt. Could use the exercise myself, too, if I'm honest," he continued, grinning a little wryly at the end. Between physical education at school, some other sports he had done and the work at the farm, he'd always been quite active. These last few days were, physically anyway, almost a holiday for him. One he'd end soon, if it were up to him, he missed the activity. PT had prepared him well for frequent, tough work-outs, and the habit hadn't been too hard to maintain.... Relatively speaking. And at least it had given him an impressive upper body, or so he was told. Good condition and strong arms, hands and shoulders were mighty useful when riding rambunctious horses, though, and that was just one good application of his 'physical prowess', as his sister always called it. ... and the wind out of Africa

At his question James smirked "I ride both English and Western on him. English is competitive though, western is just for pleasure Letting his voice echo through the halls of the stables as he then kicked a small portion of dropped hal against Primo's stall, absent mindedly.
At the mention of his mare on the way James could remember when Primo was being shipped over. James was completely lost and alone, Primo was like a best friend for James, after all James had been the one who raised him. Letting a smile pull at his face "Ahh I remember waiting for my Stallion ... It was a forever wait, I'm sure shes doing great and everything is fine James tried to be supportive although, James was exactly the same when Primo was being shipped. As the conversation switched to exercise, James grinned and gave Primo a pat "Yeah this guy gives me all the exercise i need.. When he doesn't listen to my whistle, I'm usually out chasing him in the pasture Grinning as Primo turned to look at James innocently, his big eyes blinked a few times before his curiosity reuturned to the dog.

In the sea and the sun and the sand ...
Noah nodded as the man explained; while he didn't really see the appeal of western riding with a warmblood, he could understand (and wanted to experience, once) the thrill of a well-executed spin or a cutting horse with great cow sense. He'd seen them in action at their farm, and may have hopped on once or twice, but his heart had been sold on show jumping and cross country already, and the one time he had tried to jump with a stock saddle (not even a real western saddle, thank the lord!) he had walked funny for three weeks straight - it had been a good reminder to never ever do that again.
"I'm pretty sure Karoo'll be fine. She's a cool, steady horse. It's just that in the seven year I have her, we've never spent much time apart, unhealthily obsessed as that may sound." For a moment he fell quiet, contemplating his words, before smirking. "Guess we can see it as character building," he quipped, still quite certain that the moment Karoo arrived things'd feel better.
"The plus of him," Noah started, again gesturing at his dog as he heard the man's comment. "He's used to dealing with horses on big stretches of land," for a moment, he could see the almost prairie-like plains of Namibia in his mind's eye, the glistening river in the wet season, herd of oryx next to it, some warthogs frolicking around, baboons across it "guarding them or herding them, if necessary. The few times Karoo refused to come, I just sent Jay after her. Good deterrent." His smirk had turned a little wistful. He knew that the way he grew up was a fairytale to most, a way of life they could hardly imagine it. That he could imagine - what experience he had with 'a normal life' was indeed quite different from what he was used to at home.
It was why this 'experience' was all the more exciting and, in a way, also all the more terrifying - because it wasn't just a bit different from his home life, but very different. Especially as he had spent the past few years fulltime at home, riding horses, training horses, breaking them in, taming a few of the more promising wild to half-wild ones if he could, keep an eye on the feet of their horses along with everyone else... It was a totally different life. He was curious how well he'd fit in here now - given they all competed, rode horse and loved horses, he figured he'd get along well enough with the people he'd meet.
Suddenly a rueful expression slid over his face, and with a grin he extended his hand. "I'm Noah, by the way. Noah Vanderholt," he introduced himself. "Fresh meat, so to say," he flippantly added.

[/s] .A horse is only as strong as its Rider. A light breeze was sweeping through the aisle of the stables, the door at the far end left open. With a smile James nodded as he listened to the man explain his mare, to be honest she seemed like a really easy going, laid back gal. Chuckling lightly, James shrugged his broad shoulder's "Well she sounds like a really good steed, I can't really say Primo is laid back ... He tends to be a show off when practicing, or even competing Putting a hand on the back of his neck as he confessed his equines little ego problem. Letting a curious gaze fall to the dog once more, it seemed to have full attention on himself and Primo, a small grin played on his face, realizing how much he was starting to miss the three border collies on his ranch.
The topic had now switched to the purpose of the companion next to the man and James couldn't help but admire the dog's loyalty and respect for the man. When he ended his words with mentioning the dog would herd in the man horse James let out a chuckle "Now if only the dogs back home would herd the horses not the cows would be great" Letting his hand rest on Primo's withers as he then slouched a little in his posture, completely relaxed. Upon the man introducing himself as Noah, James tipped his black cowboy hat and let a his hand extend to shake Noah's "James ... James Knight and I've been here for a little while now .. not to long though and its good to see some fresh meat around here" Ending his words with a chuckle as he released Noah's hand and placed it back on Primo's withers.

In the sea and the sun and the sand ...
Noah couldn't help but grin a little at those words, nodding in agreement. "She's that, most of the time," as any good show horse, an audience did wonders for her attitude and to get her a bit 'showy', something she admittedly lacked a bit of when at home. But that was one of the reasosn he liked her, above all. She was calm, laid-back, reliable and didn't much in the way of cues, which he perhaps liked most of all. And it came in handy every now and then - he knew that, when it came to giving leg aids, he was a lot less refined and... Well, agile. He'd almost call it occupational hazard, but it didn't really have to do with his 'occupation'. He'd ridden horses before and after the accident and its aftermath, and yes, kicking a horse in the flanks wasn't always as easy as it seemed, but he had adjusted well enough - him being here was proof of that.
For a moment he hesitated what to say to the man - personally, he liked it when horses got a bit more show-y at competitions, gave them an extra edge. Then again, sometimes they became hard to manage, and that wasn't all that great. So he opted for an understanding nod and silence.
He laughed lightely at the man's next words. "It comes in handy," he stated with a hint of a smile still lingering. He really didn't like chasing after his horses, especially not at home, where some of the pastures were up to hundred acres big. Besides, part of it had been pure instinct for Jay, it was in his very blood. Granted, protecting his 'flock' was too - one of the reasons he'd ended up not only sometimes herding up the local wildlife, but also fighting local predators. Luckily he'd never tried his paws at one of the big cats that every now and then slipped past, took a few animals and moved along again. Defeating jackals was one; big cats were a whole other story.
"I'll take your word for it," he practically teased James, although he agreed with it. New people always tended to be fun to watch and, in some cases, become friends after a while. It just was a little different when you were the 'new people'. He'd deal with it, though. Didn't terribly mind it much - come summer or other warm days, he'd be stared at and whispered about anyway. Nothing new to him.
