Jude was warming up Ebony, his 16.1 hand pure balck mare. He had moved her into a trot with a little more leg than what he would have liked to use. She was having one of her "mare days" where she didn't want to do anything except for sit around and sleep. But, when one was in a school like this, there really were no rest days. He had only been here for two days and this was his first time riding here. The ring was beautifully sanded. It wasn't too squish and not too hard. Jude hated riding on super squishy sand. Not only did it make the horse work harder but, generally the horses were slower. Jude loved speed. He liked going faster and faster but, his mare was much slower paced. She liked to take her time. Ebony was calm and level headed and did excellent with crowds but, Jude would like her to be a bit faster.
Well, he had set up a three jumps for him to practice on her. He asked for a transition into a canter. She picked one up but it was slow, dragging slow. He gave her even more leg, she sped up slightly. As they rounded the corner and approached the jump, Jude gave Ebony even more leg. He knew that he was pushing the mare but, this wasn't the little leaugues anymore and they both needed to step up their game. He asked for a jump and she did. They cleared it but, she broke stride as soon as they landed and began a fast trot. He raised an eyebrow and gave a stern command to start cantering. C'mon girl, we can do better than this. She obeyed Jude and began cantering again. She had her head low like she was competing in a western pleasure competition. There was a lot they needed to work on and Jude wanted to see an instructor or something to help him out.
They were approaching the second jump, this one was on an angle in the corner. Ebony stopped in stride and refused the jump. Jude circled her around and became determined to get over this jump. He was not losing this battle with her. He got her back into a canter from the walk, a perk from having dressage training done with Ebony. They approached the jump again, jude felt her try to slow down again and refuse but he pushed her forward and she continued her stride and took the jump, she knocked over a pole but, she went over it. He praised her for taking the jump by patting her on the neck.
He asked Ebony to slow to a trot for the next jump, not that her stride wasn't boardering trotting to begin with. He wanted her to trot over the last jump before having her walk a lap. It was pretty hot out here and Ebony was already on the boarder of breaking a sweat. She slowed down and picked her head up like she was actually awake now. Funny. Sleeping when cantering but awake when trotting. Ha. He asked for a jump, and she did. She knocked over another rail and the jump was awkward. We have A LOT of work to do. Even thought the jump wasn't perfect, she needed to walk for a lap. She was breathing heavy and starting to sweat and she needed a breather. He planned on doing all three jumps again, none of them were even near perfect.
